Johor Attractions – Islands and Beaches

Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city into a world of peace and tranquility at Johor’s islands and beaches.

Pulau Pemanggil

The largest of the cluster of islands in Johor is Pemanggile. There are some 30 fishing spots here to the delight of avid anglers. Look out for fishing packages which include boat transfers and accommodation. Squid-fishing is another option available during certain times of the year. You can also go jungle trekking as well as snorkeling and diving around this island.

Pulau Aur

The unspoilt island of Aur is the perfect dive destination. The waters here offer divers an excellent opportunity to encounter pelagic including jacks, barracudas, and black tip sharks. The best time to dive is between April and October when the sea is calmer and visibility is at its best.

Pulau Tinggi, Pulau Besar and Pulau Dayang

The islands of Tinggi, Besar and Dayang are idyllic secluded getaways. These islands boast beautiful beaches with shady cool tress and clear waters. Simple resorts are the order o the day. Perfect for simply working on nothing, but a tan!

Desaru

Desaru boasts 25km of inviting beaches fringed by palms and caruarinas. It lies in Kota Tinggi, the southeastern corner of Johor, approximately 98km from Johor Bahru. The waters here are perfect for a relaxing swim, water skiing and catamaran sailing. Rent a canoe and set off to explore the beach surroundings or tee-off at the adjacent 18-hole international standard golf course and enjoy a magnificent view of the South China Sea; go wild outdoors and learn how to fly an ultra-light aircraft or take part in a go-cart race. Other recreational activities include jungle trekking, horseback riding, archery and 4×4 off-road adventures.

There are several premier resorts as well as reasonably priced chalet accommodation for budget travelers here. Facilities at the beach front include picnic grounds, restaurants, a food court and souvenir shops. Desaru is also the venue for international triathlons.

Mersing Beaches

Penyabong Beach is about 36km from Mersing town. Visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, canoeing, fishing, camping and jungle trekking. Accommodation ranges from budget to mid-range with some resorts offering meeting facilities.

Tanjung Leman is about 72km south of Mersing town. The beach here is beside the Tanjung Leman staging point which is an alternative jetty (besides Mersing) to get to the offshore islands of Johor. Chalets and campsites are available for those who wish to stay and enjoy activities such as swimming, bird watching, jungle trekking as well as island excursions.
