Riding

There are several riding schools. Bon Air Stables, St Lawrence, are open daily all year. Le Clair Riding and Livery Stable, St John, have lots of ponies suitable for children. Tuition is available.

Sub-Aqua Diving

Visitors are advised to seek local advice before taking the plunge – 40ft tides produce currents as fast as 10 miles an hour. The Jersey Underwater Centre has a school in Bouley Bay which offers individual dives or tuition, and a shop in First Tower which hires out tanks, wetsuits etc,

They also hire out windsurfing boards.

Surfing

Headquarters of the Jersey Surf School at the Watersplash night club on St Ouen’s Bay. Tuition fees include use of board and wetsuit. Boards can also be hired separately.

Sailing

The two best-known clubs are the St Helier Yacht Club. South Pier, and the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club in St Aubin. Both have facilities for visiting yachtsmen. The Channel Islands Sailing School offers elementary and intermediate courses during the summer.

Walking

There are fine cliff walks along much of the coast – especially nice is the relatively uncluttered north-western tip at St Ouen, where there are exceptional views of Guernsey, Sark and Herm at Grosnez Point, 200ft above sea level. Nearby are the ruins of a 14th c chateau.

Sports and Entertainments

Huge complex at Fort Regent, St Helier, with plenty of family-oriented amusements and indoor sports facilities including badminton, tennis, bowls, swimming, table-tennis, squash, rifle and archery ranges and many others.

Battle of Flowers

2nd Thurs in Aug annually: breathtaking display of floats made entirely of flowers, worked on for months. After the parade is an evening fete with stage shows and a Gala Ball.

Good Food Festival

Every spring Jersey’s many excellent restaurants compete. A complete list of winners can be obtained from Tourist Office, St Helier. French, Italian and seafood are particularly fine.
