Mareeba

Mareeba is where the lush tropical greenery of the Atherton Tableland gives way to the outback. The viewing areas at Mareeba Wetlands show astonishing numbers of tropical birds, as well as roos and crocs. Boat tours around the 20 sq km wetlands give visitors a chance to see these amazing creatures in the wild.

Atherton

Atherton is the heart of the tableland. Smaller than Mareeba, it serves as both an agricultural and tourism center. The Crystal Caves is a fun stone museum in a vast fake cave under Atherton’s streets.

Townsville

Townsville, where the 100 000 residents and flocks of tourists enjoy several good museums and the Reef HQ. Reef HQ is the world’s largest living coral reef aquarium. There are snorkeling and diving sites off Townsville, and ferries heading out to the Great Barrier Reef.

One of the area’s best-known and beautiful attractions is Magnetic Island, just offshore. It is a relaxed, unpretentious place to visit. Featuring four little villages, picnic tables and sandy beaches, it is a lovely place to unwind.

Ingham and Hinchinbrook Island

The spectacular Wallaman falls at 178m, Australia’s highest, are located at west of Ingham. The beaches and protected rainforest of the Innisfail coast are superb, with the ever popular resort destinations of Mission Beach and Dunk Island just 45 minutes away. Either of these spots is worth stopping to soak up the beauty and relaxed charm o this glorious coastline.
