Dr. Jürgen F. Strube, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BASF Aktiengesellschaft, to be Awarded the 2005 International Palladium Medal by the Société de Chimie Industrielle–American Section

The award was established in 1958 and the first Palladium Medal was presented to Ernest-John Solvay of Belgium. Twenty-one subsequent awards have been made to American, French, British, and German recipients. The recipients were: Werner C. Brown (Hercules), Vincent A. Calarco (Crompton), Harry Corless (ICI), Earnest W. Deavenport, Jr. (Eastman Chemical Company), Jean-Rene Fourtou (Rhône-Poulenc), Thomas G. Gibian (Henkel), Thomas L. Gossage (Hercules), J. Peter Grace (W.R. Grace), Edward R. Kane (DuPont), William W. Keeler (Phillips Petroleum), Robert D. Kennedy (Union Carbide), Gerald D. Laubach (Pfizer), Paul F. Oreffice (Dow Chemical), Frank Popoff (Dow Chemical), Monroe J. Rathbone (Standard Oil), William S. Stavropolous (Dow), Charles A. Thomas (Monsanto), Paul Toinet (Bayer), Konrad M. Weis (Bayer), Henry S. Wingate (International Nickel), Karl Winnackker (Hoechst), and Edgar S. Woolard, Jr. (DuPont).

Dr. Jürgen Strube was born in Bochum, Germany, in 1939. He studied law from 1960 to 1964 in Freiburg, Germany; Geneva, Switzerland; and Munich, Germany, and obtained his doctorate in law in 1967. In 1968, he passed the second state examination in law.

Dr. Strube has more than 35 years of experience in the chemical industry. Dr. Strube joined BASF in 1969 as a member of the Finance Department. Shortly thereafter he worked at BASF Antwerpen N.V. in Belgium before being transferred to the Logistics division in Germany. In 1974, he was assigned to BASF Brasileira S.A. in Brazil. He was promoted to be head of Glasurit do Brasil Ltda. in 1980, and the President of the Brazil division in 1982. In 1985, he moved to head the company’s U.S. operations in New Jersey, and became a member of the Board of Executive Directors. In 1988, he returned to the company’s headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

From 1990 until May 2003, he served as Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF Aktiengesellschaft in Germany. Since May 2003, he has been the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of BASF Aktiengesellschaft in Germany. Since July 2003, he has also served as President of UNICE, Brussels (Union of Industrial and Employers’ Confederations of Europe). He is also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Fuchs Petrolub AG in Mannheim, Germany.

Dr. Strube has had a long and distinguished career of service to the chemical industry and its associations. In the past, he was a member of the Board of the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) and was that group’s President from 1996 to 1997. He was a founding member of the German “Employment Initiative,” and Deputy Chairman and a Member of the Board of the German Science Foundation. At present, he is a Member of the Transatlantic Business Dialogue, a member of the Advisory Board of the Mercosur-EU Business Forum, a Member of the Supervisory Board of the Center for European Economic Research, a Member of the Steering Committee of the Germany Industry Association (BDI), and a Member of the Steering Committee of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA).

His other honors and titles include: “Honored Dignitary” (Dr. h.c.) of the University of Maryland, University College, Maryland; Honorary senator of Mannheim University, Germany; Honorary professor of the German Postgraduate School of Administrative Sciences in Speyer, Germany; Awarded the Centenary Medal of the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), London, England; Awarded the Order of Merit, 1st Class, of the Federal Republic of Germany.
